This artwork is a VR installation that portrays the coexistence of multiple temporalities within a single space. In our daily lives, we experience how the perception of time can vary depending on our circumstances. Enjoyable moments seem to pass in the blink of an eye while waiting periods can feel eternal. Even in the exact location, each individual’s perception of time can differ significantly based on their situation. Even among passengers on the same train, the flow of time for each passenger is entirely different. One passenger is on their way to the airport and about to miss their flight. One passenger is just relaxing and enjoying the scenery from the train window. Each passenger feels a different flow of time.
This installation explores its “multiple time flows existing within a single space” through VR technology. Several zoetropes (traditional cylindrical animation devices) are arranged in concentric circles within the virtual environment. As the viewer operates a rotary hand controller, each zoetrope spins at a different speed, expressing its unique flow of time through animation. Through this mechanism, viewers can physically experience a space where multiple temporalities coexist while simultaneously manipulating the time within this space through their actions. Additionally, numerical objects have been placed in the virtual space to evoke the concept of beautiful time within the digital realm.
